Billie Holiday – I’ll be seeing you
FR : J’ai découvert Billie Holiday pour la première fois à l’âge de 13 ans. J’étais dans un centre commercial, regardant des disques, quand je suis tombée sur une compilation de ses premiers morceaux. Il y avait la photo emblématique de Billie avec la fleur blanche dans les cheveux. Lady Day. Le nom était empreint de mythologie et de mystère. L’imagerie et la musique s’entremêlent.
J’ai acheté l’album et j’ai été instantanément accro. Elle est une compagne aussi vitale pour moi aujourd’hui qu’elle l’était alors. Une voix d’un autre monde. La Marraine de la Soul.
EN: I first discovered Billie Holiday when I was 13 years old. I was standing in the local mall, looking through a box of records when I stumbled across a compilation of her early work.
It had the iconic photograph of Billie with the white flower in her hair. Lady Day. The name was laced with mythology and mystery. The imagery and music entwined.
I bought the album and I was instantly hooked. She is as vital a companion for me today, as she was then.
An otherworldly voice. The Godmother of soul.
Lou Reed and John Cale – Songs for Drella – Open House
FR : Je suis une grande fan de Lou Reed et de John Cale et cet album est une perle.
On a juste envie d’être en compagnie de ces deux-là. L’intimité et l’esprit. Excellentes paroles. Super jeu.
On veut entendre Lou Reed parler d’Andy Warhol et on ne refuserait certainement pas une invitation à cette « open house » !

You just want to be in the company of these guys. The intimacy and wit. Great lyrics. Great playing.

Marianne Faithfull – Negative Capability/Misunderstanding
FR : Cet album m’a profondément touchée. L’expression «capacité négative» a été utilisée pour la première fois par le poète romantique John Keats pour décrire la capacité des artistes à accepter les doutes et le mystère, la confusion et l’incertitude, dans la poursuite de la beauté artistique sur les faits et la raison. Une manière parfaite de résumer la vie de Marianne.
L’album est un véritable témoignage de qui elle est aujourd’hui. Honnête et sage. Une conteuse d’histoires forte, transmettant de superbes chansons et paroles, avec une belle production de Warren Ellis.
EN: This album touched me deeply. The phrase “Negative capability” was first used by the romantic poet John Keats to describe an ability for artists to accept doubts and mystery, confusion and uncertainty, in the pursuit of artistic beauty over fact and reason. A perfect way to summon the life of Marianne.
The album stands as a true testament to who she is today. Honest and wise. A strong story teller, conveying great songs and lyrics, with a beautiful production by Warren Ellis.
Leonard Cohen – Thank you for the dance/What happens to the heart
FR : Cet album est venu à nous qui aimions Leonard comme un cadeau de l’au-delà.
C’était extrêmement puissant de regarder la vidéo au moment de la sortie de la chanson, sachant que Leonard n’était en fait plus là pour la présenter. Comme Marianne, il parle d’expérience, de perte et d’une vie vécue à sa pleine capacité. Et il y a là une forme d’abandon, que j’imagine ne peut être acquise que plus tard dans la vie. Regarder en arrière, mais aller vers le futur. Pour un autre aperçu. Qui pourrait mieux faire ça que Leonard ? Je l’aime beaucoup et c’est une magnifique chanson.

It was immensely powerful to watch the video as the song was released, knowing that Leonard was in fact not here to present it. Like Marianne, he speaks of experience, loss and and a life lived to its fullest capacity. And there is a form of surrender there, that I imagine can only be gained later on in life. Looking back, yet reaching into the future. For another glimpse. Who could ever do that better than Leonard. I love him dearly and this is a beautiful song.
Sibylle Baier – The end
FR : Vous connaissez peut-être Sybille des films de Wim Wenders, mais c’est une grande compositrice, avec une voix à couper le souffle. Les chansons qui composaient son album Colour Green étaient des enregistrements sur cassette reel-to-reel qu’elle avait mis en vente en Allemagne entre 1970 et 1973.
30 ans plus tard, son fils Robby a compilé un cd de ces enregistrements pour les offrir aux membres de sa famille en guise de cadeaux et il l’a également remis au label Orange twin qui l’a adoré et qui l’a sorti. L’album a reçu un grand succès 30 ans après son enregistrement d’origine. C’était un vrai trésor de découvrir cette musique. Si vous aimez Joni Mitchell ou Leonard, vous l’aimerez aussi. This is “The end”.
EN: You might know Sybille from Wim Wenders movies, but she is a great songs-writer, with a breathtakingly beautiful voice. The songs that made up her album Colour green, was home reel-to-reel tape recordings that she put down in Germany between 1970-73. 30 years later her son Robby compiled a cd of these recordings to give to family members as presents he also handed it over to the Orange twin label that loved it and released it. The album has received great acclaim 30 years after its origin. It felt like a real treasure to discover this music. If you love Joni Mitchell or Leonard, you will love her too. This is “The end”.
