FR: Beaucoup de ces souvenirs remontent à notre jeunesse, parce que c'est sans doute à cette période qu'on se construit le plus, non ?
EN : A lot of this stuff is from when we were younger, cause I guess that’s the most formational stuff right?
The Mountain Goats - The Best Ever Death Metal Band In Denton
FR : Plus j'y pense, plus je suis convaincu que le fait d'écouter les Mountain Goats quand j'étais adolescent a fortement influencé notre approche des paroles. C'est un certain style de paroles un peu geek, direct et plein de références, qui, je dirais, est assez populaire aujourd'hui chez les artistes pop.
EN : The more that I think about it, the more I’m convinced that listening to the Mountain Goats when I was a teenager strongly influenced what we do lyrically. It’s a certain kind of nerdy, direct, referential lyricism that I’d say is quite popular nowadays amongst pop people.
St Vincent - Strange Mercy
FR : Cet album a marqué chacun d’entre nous quand nous étions adolescents. Pour moi en particulier, je pense que c’est un bon exemple de chanson qui comporte un passage vraiment spécial. J’ai pris l’habitude (peut-être mauvaise) de toujours chercher à créer un moment parfait dans une chanson – probablement parfois au détriment du reste. Le passage auquel je fais référence dans Strange Mercy est celui qui dit :“If I ever meet that dirty policeman who roughed you up”
EN : This album was pretty big for all of us when we were teenagers - for me specifically I think it’s a good example of a song that has one very special bit.
I’ve gotten into a (maybe bad) habit of always trying to have one perfect moment in a song - probably sometimes at the expense of the rest of it. The bit I’m referring to in Strange Mercy is the “If I ever meet that dirty policeman who roughed you up” part.
Elliott Smith - Independence Day
FR : Je ne me suis vraiment intéressé à lui que ces dernières années, mais dès que je l’ai découvert, je me suis tout de suite identifié à cet équilibre qu’il parvient à trouver entre des harmonies musicales étranges et alambiquées, et des mélodies qui restent en tête sans pour autant être obscures.
L’intro instrumentale de cette chanson est un petit refrain circulaire parfait, mais elle joue avec ces passages modaux entre majeur et mineur (je crois) qui titillent l’esprit.
EN : Only been properly getting into him in the last few years, but once I did I immediately identified with his balance between weird / tricksy musical harmony, and stuff that is memorable and not obtuse.
The opening instrumental section of this song is a perfect little circular hook, but does all this major/minor modal stuff (I think) that itches your brain.
The Drones - Taman Shud
FR : The Drones étaient un groupe très important pour nous ; leur chanteur, Gareth Liddiard, fait désormais partie d'un très bon projet appelé Tropical Fuck Storm, et les Drones n'existent malheureusement plus. Cette chanson illustre notre penchant pour les petites lignes de guitare saccadées.
EN : The Drones were a big band for us; the singer Gareth Liddiard is now with a very good project called Tropical Fuck Storm, and the Drones are sadly no more. This song represents our tendency to do twitchy little guitar lines.
John Grant - Queen of Denmark
FR : Grant m'a appris qu'il peut être utile/efficace de jouer une version légèrement exagérée de soi-même, ce qui permet d'exprimer haut et fort tous ses problèmes. Il m'a aussi appris qu'on peut être à la fois tout à fait sérieux et complètement absurde.
EN : Grant taught me that it can be useful/effective to play a slightly exaggerated version of yourself, through which you can yell about all your issues. Also that you can be totally serious and totally absurd at the exact same time.
Portishead - Strangers
FR : J'ai trouvé un exemplaire de Dummy dans une boutique caritative quand j'étais tout jeune, et je l'ai acheté simplement parce qu'il avait l'air mystérieux. Une fois rentré chez moi, je l'ai écouté et ça m'a littéralement fait perdre la tête ; c'est sans doute cet album qui m'a orienté vers une certaine voie, tant sur le plan des goûts musicaux que de ma vie en général. Honnêtement, si je n'étais pas entré dans cette boutique Oxfam, je serais peut-être comptable aujourd'hui.
EN : I found a copy of Dummy in a charity shop when I was dead young, and bought it just based on its mysteriousness. When I got home and listened it obviously blew my head off, and is potentially entirely responsible for sending me down a certain path taste/life-wise. Honestly if I hadn’t have walked into that Oxfam I might be an accountant today.
