Avant Noël, La Face B a rencontré King Hannah à la Rock School Barbey lors des dernières dates de leur tournée européenne. L’occasion de discuter avec Hannah Merrick et Craig Whittle de leur dernier album Big Swimmer, un projet immersif qui plonge l’auditeur dans un univers sonore riche et atmosphérique. Dans une interview aussi sincère qu’inspirante, ils reviennent sur l’évolution de leur son, leurs influences musicales, et l’alchimie qui se crée en live. Un échange profond et spontané qui nous emmène au cœur de leur univers, entre atmosphères envoûtantes et storytelling intime.

La Face B : Bonjour King Hannah, comment allez-vous aujourd’hui ?
King Hannah : Très bien, merci.
La Face B : Vous entamez le dernier tiers de cette tournée avec beaucoup de dates et de trajets. Comment se passe la tournée
Hannah Merrick : Elle se passe super bien, non ?
Craig Whittle : Oui, vraiment.
Hannah Merrick : Nous avons eu tellement de concerts complets, c’était inattendu.
Craig Whittle : Nous avons joué dans beaucoup d’endroits où nous n’étions jamais allés auparavant, donc nous ne savions pas trop à quoi nous attendre.
Hannah Merrick : La France et l’Espagne sont de nouvelles destinations pour nous, et c’était complet.
La Face B : Vous êtes un vrai coup de cœur pour le public français. Vous avez déjà joué plusieurs dates ici, et ce n’est pas fini. Avez-vous des anecdotes ou des histoires à partager sur cette tournée ? Une salle préférée ?
Hannah Merrick : Nous avons adoré Dijon ! C’était génial. Le public était incroyable. Cologne aussi, c’était un super concert. Si le public est bon, le concert est bon. Les deux vont de pair.
Craig Whittle : Les concerts en Italie, à Rome et Turin.
La Face B : Cette tournée ressemble un peu à « un jour, une salle, un mois ». Une tournée bien remplie.
King Hannah : Rires… C’est vrai !
La Face B : Parlons de Big Swimmer ! La dernière fois, vous aviez rencontré Léa de La Face B juste avant la sortie de l’album. Vous disiez être impatients de le dévoiler au monde. Maintenant qu’il est sorti et que vous jouez ces morceaux en live, comment est la réaction du public ? Cela s’est-il passé comme vous l’espériez ?
Craig Whittle : Je pense que c’est encore mieux que ce que nous espérions.
Hannah Merrick : J’aimerais bien savoir quels morceaux nous avions dit à l’époque que nous étions les plus impatients de jouer.
La Face B : Il y a quelque chose à ce sujet sur votre Instagram. Hannah, tu avais dit que ta chanson préférée était Big Swimmer, et Craig, tu avais mentionné Suddenly, Your Hand.
King Hannah : Bien recherché !
Craig Whittle : Et ce sont toujours deux de mes morceaux préférés à jouer en live. J’aime tous les jouer, et c’est l’un des sets les plus longs que nous ayons faits. On aime les chansons dans lesquelles les gens peuvent se perdre.
La Face B : Tout l’album est très atmosphérique, surtout Big Swimmer, car il nous transporte ailleurs.
Hannah Merrick : C’est gentil, merci.
La Face B : Je sais que l’inspiration vient de votre voyage en Amérique, mais c’est le genre d’album qu’on écoute en explorant le monde.
Hannah Merrick : C’est super, merci.
La Face B : Quand vous jouez en live, y a-t-il des moments où vous ressentez une connexion particulière avec le public sur un titre en particulier ?
Hannah Merrick : Je pense que Suddenly, Your Hand a toujours cet effet, ainsi que Big Swimmer.
La Face B : En gros, vos deux morceaux préférés !
Craig Whittle : Oui ! Plusieurs personnes ont pleuré.
Hannah Merrick : Et dès que l’on joue les premiers accords, le public les reconnaît tout de suite, il acclame, et ces morceaux semblent résonner chez les gens car ils sont très personnels. On peut s’y attacher. J’entends les gens les chanter, et c’est tellement touchant.
La Face B : Comment avez-vous adapté votre son en studio pour la scène ? La version studio est très soignée, produite avec des arrangements élégants. Comment transposez-vous ce son en live ?
Hannah Merrick : Ohhh ! L’écriture reflète les artistes que Craig et moi écoutions ou écoutons encore au moment de Big Swimmer. C’était différent de ceux que nous écoutions lors de la création de notre précédent album I Am Not Sorry, I Was Just Being Me et de l’EP Tell Me Your Mind and I’ll Tell You Mine. Notre évolution artistique est simplement liée aux artistes que nous écoutons, que ce soit en termes d’écriture ou de son. Personnellement, j’ai beaucoup écouté Bill Callahan, et un peu de Joni Mitchell.
La Face B : Joni Mitchell revient toujours !
Hannah Merrick : C’est ma pref.
La Face B : Pour l’EP précédent, quels artistes écoutiez-vous ?
Hannah Merrick : C’était plus Mazzy Star. Et toi, qui écoutais-tu beaucoup ?
Craig Whittle : Je dirais la même chose. Pour le premier album, on voulait quelque chose de plus cinématographique et atmosphérique, avec des chansons qui se suivent et s’enchaînent naturellement. Pour Big Swimmer, on voulait simplement écrire de meilleures chansons sous leur forme la plus épurée. Je pense que c’est la différence.
La Face B : En parlant de la profondeur atmosphérique de Big Swimmer, quelle était votre vision pour le clip ?
Craig Whittle : On avait cette idée car la chanson est presque divisée en deux parties : une introduction et un grand moment de révélation avec les enfants.
La Face B : C’était très malin. Les enfants ressemblaient à des mini-vous et ils étaient à fond dedans !
King Hannah : rires … Oui !
La Face B : Même si on sait qu’ils ne jouent pas vraiment les bons accords, ils étaient tellement investis que c’était touchant à voir.
Hannah Merrick : Tant mieux !
La Face B : Et vous avez aussi choisi de tourner dans un gymnase.
Craig Whittle : Oui, un bon décor. Ça donnait une ambiance très années 90. La musique a un côté nostalgique. Et en plus, c’était ma nièce. Comme pour la vidéo de Davey Says, tournée dans un garage : on voulait un clip qui aurait pu être réalisé dans les années 90. On essaie toujours d’avoir ce côté intemporel.
La Face B : C’est marrant parce que votre musique nous fait voyager dans des lieux, alors que vos clips nous font voyager dans le temps. Big Swimmer a été inspiré par vos voyages aux États-Unis. Lors de cette tournée, est-ce que vous trouvez aussi des idées en découvrant de nouveaux endroits ?
Hannah Merrick : C’est tellement vrai ! Honnêtement, on n’y pense pas du tout sur le moment. Mais peut-être qu’en rentrant chez nous, tout nous reviendra. Ce n’est pas un processus conscient, je n’ai pas pris de notes.
Craig Whittle : Pour cet album, les histoires se sont passées en Amérique, mais elles nous sont revenues bien après.
La Face B : Pouvez-vous nous expliquer comment une chanson évolue pour vous, depuis l’idée jusqu’au morceau final ?
Hannah Merrick : On écrit chacun de notre côté, complètement séparément. Quand une chanson est prête à être partagée, on la fait écouter à l’autre qui donne ses commentaires et ses idées. À ce stade, la chanson a déjà une bonne structure, avec le chant, la mélodie, les paroles et la guitare en place. Ensuite, on la présente à Carl et Jake en répétition, et c’est là qu’on ajoute la basse et la batterie. Puis, on enregistre des démos.
Craig Whittle : C’est une nouveauté pour nous d’apporter des micros en salle de répétition et d’enregistrer deux ou trois démos avant d’aller en studio. Comme on avait une courte fenêtre pour enregistrer l’album, on voulait aller aussi loin que possible en amont.
Hannah Merrick : Oui ! Et même en enlevant tout, les chansons restent les mêmes. Elles restent reconnaissables, juste en version acoustique.
La Face B : Vous commencez toujours par les paroles ?
Hannah Merrick : Ça dépend de ce qui vient naturellement. Mais il y a toujours des étapes : d’abord seul, puis l’autre intervient, ensuite on la joue avec le groupe, et enfin on l’amène en studio.
La Face B : Comment équilibrez-vous votre créativité individuelle et votre collaboration en duo ?
King Hannah : C’est exactement ce qui se passe !
Craig Whittle : C’est chouette parce qu’on veut tous les deux exactement la même chose au final. On aime la même musique et on vise le même objectif. Mais comme on est deux, on a parfois des manières légèrement différentes d’y arriver, et ça crée un bon équilibre.
Hannah Merrick : Oui !

La Face B : Votre Instagram est très drôle…
King Hannah : Whoooo, on n’avait pas réalisé ça.
La Face B : Très fun ! Ça a l’air très spontané, mais vous avez quand même du matériel.
Hannah Merrick : Ce n’est pas spontané. On doit bien le planifier.
Craig Whittle : On n’est pas les meilleurs ! Mais on essaie.
Hannah Merrick : On essaie ! Je pense que ça va. Je n’ai pas envie d’être la meilleure sur Instagram.
La Face B : C’est une belle façon de nous inclure dans votre tournée.
Hannah Merrick : C’est personnel pour la personne qui regarde.
Craig Whittle : On essaie de penser à ce qu’on aimerait voir chez nos groupes préférés. Rien de stupide, mais plutôt des choses sur la façon dont tout est fait.
La Face B : Ça montre aussi votre personnalité et le fait que vous êtes comme tout le monde. Vous aimez rire, vous travaillez ensemble mais vous êtes aussi amis. Vous vous connaissez par cœur.
King Hannah : Tellement vrai !
La Face B : C’est important pour vous de montrer cette facette ? Vous avez vos private jokes et vous terminez les phrases de l’autre.
Hannah Merrick : C’est super d’entendre ça, parce que personne ne nous l’a jamais vraiment dit. Personne ne commente ça, donc c’est bien de savoir que ça se perçoit.
Craig Whittle : Sans ça, les gens ne sauraient pas vraiment. C’est super d’entendre ça.
Hannah Merrick : C’est adorable, merci.
La Face B : Si King Hannah devait reprendre une chanson d’un genre totalement différent, ce serait quoi et pourquoi ?
Hannah Merrick : Trop dur !
Craig Whittle : Je dirais du country, mais ce n’est pas totalement différent.
Hannah Merrick : On pourrait faire du Eminem. Ça, c’est différent.
Craig Whittle : On devrait rapper. Je t’ai déjà entendue rapper….
Hannah Merrick : Hahaha, c’est pas mal ! Le country serait une évidence parce qu’on adore ça tous les deux. On ne fait pas de country, mais il y a…
Craig Whittle : On pourrait faire une comédie musicale.
Hannah Merrick : C’est la meilleure idée du monde ! Peut-être une chanson Disney. J’adore Disney et j’adore les comédies musicales.
Craig Whittle : Tu adores les comédies musicales et tu chantes toujours des chansons de comédies musicales.
La Face B : Une comédie musicale ! C’est une super réponse.
Craig Whittle : Une comédie musicale sombre.
Hannah Merrick : Ou juste une belle comédie musicale.
La Face B : Quel est artiste ou groupe inattendu que King Hannah adore et que les gens ne soupçonneraient pas ?
Hannah Merrick : Pour moi, c’est Bailey and the Boys, un groupe country des années 70, et je suis obsédée par la chanteuse. C’est vraiment génial.
Craig Whittle : C’est encore un groupe que tu chantes tout le temps. Je pensais que tu allais dire Eminem.
La Face B : En ce moment, quel artiste contemporain vous inspire ?
Craig Whittle : Cette année, notre album préféré était celui de Cassandra Jenkins. Je viens aussi de découvrir une artiste, je crois qu’elle est française. Elle s’appelle Brigitte Fontaine. J’ai beaucoup écouté son album Brigitte Fontaine dans le van en venant ici. Je ne sais rien d’elle, mais cet album est tellement expérimental.
Hannah Merrick : Peut-être que c’est notre inspiration inattendue.
La Face B : Il y a une chanson qui s’appelle Tanagra, qu’elle a ecrit avec un son hyper rock dessus, et un riff de guitare de Matthieu Chedid qui est dingue, ça pourrait vous plaire.
Craig Whittle : Il y a aussi une chanson sur cet album, L’Auberge. C’est comme un quatuor à cordes, hyper émouvant et tellement beau.
La Face B : Et toi, Hannah ?
Hannah Merrick : Je n’ai pas beaucoup écouté de musique récemment, mais sur cette tournée, mon plus gros coup de cœur a été MJ Lenderman et son album Manning Fireworks. J’écoute toujours les mêmes artistes en boucle. J’ai toujours fait ça depuis que je suis petite. Je deviens obsédée par quelqu’un, puis je passe à un autre.
La Face B : Liverpool a une riche histoire musicale. En quoi venir de là-bas ou y vivre a influencé votre musique ?
Hannah Merrick : Craig, Tu as beaucoup écouté les Beatles ? Il y a une influence subconsciente là-dedans.
Craig Whittle : Oui, j’adore les Beatles. Je me souviens qu’en grandissant, je trouvais ça vraiment cool que le plus grand et le meilleur groupe de tous les temps vienne de Liverpool. Ils auraient pu venir de n’importe où, mais ils viennent de Liverpool. Mis à part le fait qu’on s’est rencontrés là-bas, je ne pense pas que ça ait influencé notre son. On n’a jamais fait partie d’une petite communauté musicale. On a commencé en écrivant dans notre chambre, en essayant juste de faire de la bonne musique. Ce n’était pas en étant intégré à une scène locale. On ne se sent pas particulièrement connectés à l’identité musicale de Liverpool.
La Face B : En 2025, quel est le plan pour King Hannah ?
Hannah Merrick : Le plan, c’est d’écrire de nouvelles chansons pendant les premiers mois, puis on partira en tournée et sur la saison des festivals dès avril-mai. Je pense que ça va durer jusqu’à l’automne. Voilà notre plan : écrire, écrire, écrire. Jouer, jouer, jouer.
La Face B : C’est un très bon plan, et c’est un luxe de pouvoir faire ça à 100 % du temps. Vous aimez autant la création que la scène.
Hannah Merrick : On adore l’équilibre entre les deux.
Craig Whittle : Ça donne l’impression d’avoir deux métiers différents.

King Hannah: Great, Thank you.
La Face B: You are on the last third of this tour with a lot of travelling. How is the tour going?
Hannah Merrick: It is going so well, isn’t it?
Craig Whittle: Yeah It really is.
Hannah Merrick: We had so many sold-out shows we were not expecting.
Craig Whittle: We played a lot of places we have never been to before, so we did not really know what to expect.
Hannah Merrick: France and Spain are new for us, and they sold out.
La Face B: You are a bit of a crush for the French audience. You did a few dates already, and it is not finished. Any anecdotes or stories to share from this tour so far? Any favorite venue?
Hannah Merrick: We loved Dijon! It felt great. The crowd were amazing. Cologne was very good. Again a great crowd. If the crowd is great, the show is great. It goes hand in hand.
Craig Whittle: The shows in Italy, Rome and Torino.
La Face B: This tour is a bit like one day one venue one month. A big, packed tour.
King Hannah: Laughing…. That is true!
La Face B: Let’s talk about Big Swimmer! Last time, you met with Lea from La Face B and it was before the album launch. You were talking about your excitement of showing it to the World. Now the album is out. You started playing the songs live. How is the response? Did it go as well as you expected?
Craig Whittle: I think it is going better than we could have hoped.
Hannah Merrick: I would love to know what songs we said then we were more excited playing.
La Face B: There is something about it on your Instagram. Hannah you said your favorite track was Big Swimmer and Craig, you mentioned Suddenly, your hand.
King Hannah: Good research!
Craig Whittle: And they are two of my favorite ones to play live. I love playing them all live, and this is like a longer set we have done. We like the songs people can get lost in.
La Face B: The whole album is very atmospheric, especially Big Swimmer because you take us somewhere.
Hannah Merrick: It’s nice! Thank you.
La Face B: I know you got the inspiration from your trip to America but it feels it is the kind of album you play when you explore the world.
Hannah Merrick: It is great, thank you.
La Face B: About these favorite tracks… When you play live, are there moments in the show when there is a deep connection with the audience on a specific track?
Hannah Merrick: I think Suddenly, your hand always has that and Big Swimmer.
La Face B: Basically, your two favorite tracks!
Craig Whittle: Yeah! We had quite a few people cry.
Hannah Merrick: And the second you play the chords, people know It straight away, cheer and it seems to resonate with people because it is such a personal track. We could attach yourself to it. I hear people singing it and it is so nice.
La Face B: How did you adapt your studio sound for a live performance. The studio version is very polished, produced with elegant arrangements. How do you translate that sound into your live performance?
Hannah Merrick: ohhh! From the writing, it is a reflection of the artists Craig and I are listening to or were listening to when making Big Swimmer. It was different from the artists we were listening to when we were making the previous record “I am not Sorry, I was just being me”, and the EP “Tell me your mind and I’ll tell you mine”. Artistic growth is just down to the artists we are listening to in terms of songwriting and the sound. I personally listened to a lot of Bill Callahan, a bit of Joni Mitchell.
La Face B: Joni Mitchell always comes back.
Hannah Merrick: She is my girl.
La Face B: In the previous EP, what artists did you listen to?
Hannah Merrick: It was more Mazzy Star. Who were you listening to a lot?
Craig Whittle: I will say the same. We were going for a more cinematic and atmospheric with all songs linked together for the first record. For Big Swimmer, we just wanted to write better songs in the simplest form. I think that is the difference.
La Face B: Talking about Big Swimmer atmospheric depth, tell me about the vision for the music video?
Craig Whittle: We had the idea because the song is almost split into two parts. The opener and the big reveal with the children.
La Face B: It was very clever. The children looked like mini you and there were so into it!
King Hannah: laughs…. Yeah!
La Face B: Even if we know they don’t have the chords right, they were so into it and it was very endearing to watch.
Hannah Merrick: Good!
La Face B: And you also set the scene in a gymnasium.
Craig Whittle: Good location. It was that kind of 90s feel. The music is quite nostalgic. And It was my niece. And the same with the Davey Says video in the garage, that was trying to make a video that could have been made in the 90s. I think we always to go for that old timeless thing.
La Face B: It is funny because your music is making us travel in places, but your music videos are very visual and make us travel in time. Big Swimmer was inspired by your travels in the US. On this tour, are you getting ideas from these travels to diverse places?
Hannah Merrick: You are so right! We honestly don’t think about it at all. I wonder when we go home, It will all start coming back. Maybe. But it is not a conscious thing. I have not been consciously writing ideas down.
Craig Whittle: For this album, those were stories that happen in America but they came back to us a while after.
La Face B: Can you tell us how a song evolves for you: from the idea, the sound, the lyrics and the finished track?
Hannah Merrick: We write separately, completely separately. When a song is ready to show the other person, we do and the other person comments, has ideas. From there, it is a good form as it got vocals, melody, lyrics are in place and your guitar is always in place. And from there, we take it to Carl and Jake who hear it in the rehearsal space and that is where we add bass and drums. And then, we get demos down.
Craig Whittle: That is a new thing to bring microphones into the practice room and do two or three demos of songs before we go to the studio because we had a small window to make the record. We wanted the songs to be as far as we could take them.
Hannah Merrick: Yeah! You take everything away; the songs still sound the same. They are still recognizable. It is just an acoustic version.
La Face B: Do you always start with lyrics?
Hannah Merrick: Whatever comes naturally. But It always has stages: Solo, the other one comes in, then you introduce it to the guys and then studio.
La Face B: But how do you balance your individual creativity with collaboration as a duo as well.
King Hannah: Yes, this is what happens!
Craig Whittle: It is nice because it is two people who want the exact same thing at the end. We want to be able to sound the same. We both love the same music and we both want the same thing. But being two people, we might have two slightly different ways of getting there and I think that balances well.
Hannah Merrick: Yeah!
La Face B: Your Instagram is very humorous
King Hannah: Whoooo, we did not realize that
La Face B: Very fun! It looks very spontaneous, but you have gear.
Hannah Merrick: It is not. We have to proper plan It.
Craig Whittle: We are not the best! But we try.
Hannah Merrick: We try! I think it is ok. I don’t want to be the best at Instagram.
La Face B: It is a nice way to include us as a part of your tour.
Hannah Merrick: It is personal to the person watching.
Craig Whittle: We try to think what we would like to see our favorite bands do. Nothing stupid but things like how it was made.
La Face B: It also shows your character and the fact you are like everyone else. You enjoy a laugh, you work together but you are friends. You know each other so well
King Hannah: So True!
La Face B: It is important for you to show that part of you. You have inside jokes and finish each other sentences.
Hannah Merrick: So nice to hear because nobody ever really said that. No one comments on that so It is good to know it comes across well.
Craig Whittle: Without that, people would not really know. So nice to hear.
Hannah Merrick: That’s just lovely, thanks.
La Face B: If King Hannah had to cover a song from a totally different genre what would it be and why?
Hannah Merrick: So hard! Ok…
Craig Whittle: I would say country, but that is not totally different.
Hannah Merrick: We could do like Eminem. That is different.
Craig Whittle: We have to rap. I heard you rap.
Hannah Merrick: Hahaha, It’s good. Country would be the obvious thing because we both love country. We don’t do country music but there are….
Craig Whittle: We could do a musical.
Hannah Merrick: That’s the best idea ever. Maybe we could do a Disney song. I love Disney and I love musicals.
Craig Whittle: You love musicals and you always sing musical songs.
La Face B: Musical! That’s a great answer.
Craig Whittle: Like a dark musical.
Hannah Merrick: Or just a lovely musical.
La Face B: What is an unexpected musical people would not know about King Hannah.
Hannah Merrick: For me, It’s Bailey and the Boys, a country band from the 70s and I am obsessed with the female singer. That is so good.
Craig Whittle: It is another band you’re always singing. I thought you’d say Eminem.
La Face B: At the moment, what contemporary artist inspires you?
Craig Whittle: This year, our favorite album was Cassandra Jenkins. I have just got into an artist, and I think she is French. She is called Brigitte Fontaine. I have listened to it a lot in the van to here and the album is called Brigitte Fontaine. I don’t know anything about her, but that album is so experimental.
Hannah Merrick: Maybe that’s the unexpected inspiration.
La Face B: There is a song called Tanagra that she wrote and It has such a rock on voice and the guitar riff by Matthieu Chedid is insane and you might enjoy this.
Craig Whittle: There is a song in that album L’Auberge. It is like a string quartet, and it is so emotional and so good.
La Face B: What about you Hannah?
Hannah Merrick: I have not been listening to much music recently but on this tour but my biggest listen recently was MJ Lenderman and the album is called Manning Fireworks. I really do listen to the same people on repeat and I have always done this since I was a little girl. I am just obsessed with one person and then move on to the next.
La Face B: Liverpool has a rich music heritage. How being from there or living there shaped your music.
Hannah Merrick: Craig, you have listened to the Beatles? There is a subconscious influence in there.
Craig Whittle: Yes, I love the Beatles. I remember growing up and thinking it was really cool that the biggest and best band that has ever been, was from Liverpool. They could have been from anywhere, but they are from Liverpool. Other than the fact that we met each other there, I don’t think it has affected the sound of anything. We were never part of a little community. We came from writing in our bedroom and trying to write good music. It was not from being part of a scene. We don’t feel super connected to the musical identity of Liverpool.
La Face B: In 2025, What’s the plan for King Hannah?
Hannah Merrick: The plan is to write new songs for the first few months, and then we will be touring and doing the festival run from April May. I think it is going to go right up to Autumn. That’s our plan: Write write write. Play play play.
La Face B: It is a very good plan, and it is a luxury to be able to do that 100% of the time. And you like the creative part and the performance.
Hannah Merrick: We love the balance between the two.
Craig Whittle: It feels like two separate jobs.
