Cet été, La Face B se promène dans beaucoup de festivals partout en France pour rencontrer ses artistes favoris. Aujourd’hui, on vous propose de découvrir notre rencontre avec Gabriel et Cathal de Muder Capital, qui ont répondu à notre questionnaire lors de leur passage à Beauregard.
La Face B : La première question que je pose toujours est : Comment ça va aujourd’hui ?
Gabriel Paschal Blake : Bien, bien ! (en français 🙂 Très bien, ouais. Ça va et toi ?
LFB : Ça va bien. Je suis content d’être ici.
GPB : Nous aussi.
LFB : Avez-vous une histoire particulière avec ce festival ?
GPB : Je crois que nous venons d’arriver ici aujourd’hui.
Cathal Roper : C’est ça.
GPB : Je ne pense pas que nous ayons été, je ne sais pas si nous avons déjà été à Beauregard ?
CR : On me dit qu’on est venus ici brièvement mais pas comme…
GPB : Non, nous n’avons jamais joué à ce festival avant, donc nous sommes très excités de le faire. C’est sympa, ça ressemble à un beau dimanche en France. Nous sommes heureux d’être ici.
LFB : La pluie s’est arrêtée, donc ça va.
GPB : Exactement (rires)
LFB : Avez-vous jeté un coup d’œil à la programmation du festival avant de venir jouer ?
GPB : Uhm, nous avons vu que Sting jouait plus tard ! Mais malheureusement, nous devons rentrer à Londres ce soir. Nous devons prendre l’Eurotunnel, donc… nous ne pourrons pas rester, ce qui est dommage, mais… y a-t-il un groupe que tu as hâte de voir ?
LFB : Airbourne.
GPB : Airbourne…
LFB : Oui, toi aussi, non ?
CR : Oui !
LFB : Oui, on est là pour vous voir et pour Airbourne.
GPB : Cool. Parfait !
LFB : Comment préparez-vous votre setlist pour un temps réduit dans un festival ?
GPB : C’est amusant d’essayer de mettre le plus d’énergie possible dans un temps réduit. C’est vraiment très prenant. C’est aussi très excitant de faire de longs sets lors de nos propres concerts. Nous avons hâte de revenir en France en octobre/novembre pour faire des shows plus long. Mais oui, aujourd’hui, ce sera plus condensé et plus rokus.
LFB : Vous jouez très tôt aujourd’hui. Quelle est la différence d’accueil entre un concert très tôt et un concert plus tard dans la soirée ?
CR : Les gens sont un peu plus détendus.
LFB : Est-ce que vous pensez que les gens sont un peu plus concentrés en journée ?
CR : Oui, je ne sais pas, je n’y avais jamais pensé comme ça, mais…
GPB : Les gens se laissent un peu plus aller quand ils sont dans l’obscurité, mais ils peuvent aussi être très animés pendant la journée. Je pense que lorsqu’ils sont dans un festival, les gens veulent juste s’amuser, c’est amusant à regarder. C’est aussi amusant à regarder à la lumière du jour.
LFB : Est-ce que vous regardez les gens qui vous découvrent et vous voient pour la première fois dans un festival ?
GPB : Oui, tout à fait. On a joué dans un autre festival jeudi ? Mercredi ?
CR : Vendredi.
GPB : Pas celui là mais…
CR : Désolé, oui, mercredi.
GPB : Festival Musilac. Et il y avait vraiment beaucoup de gens qui nous voyaient pour la première fois. C’était très amusant. C’est excitant de voir les gens… parce qu’on joue presque tous les jours. Et à chaque fois que nous donnons un concert, nous sommes là. Nous l’avons donc vu et ressenti à maintes reprises, donc c’est vraiment agréable de voir les visages des gens qui nous voient pour la première fois.
LFB : Avez-vous des morceaux incontournables ou importants pour vous dans votre set list ?
CR : Oui, nous avons des morceaux énergisants, nous avons des phases de feeling… Et pour tout le reste, nous avons…
GPB : Tout a été très bon pour ce festival, nous sommes sur un champ, donc c’est vraiment explosif. C’est un vrai régal, c’est la première série de festivals où nous pouvons jouer notre nouvel album (Gigi’s Recovery, 2023). Donc oui, c’est très excitant.
Beaucoup de chansons ont été écrites l’année dernière lorsque nous étions en festivals et nous avions vraiment envie de les jouer, donc c’est bon de les jouer cette année.
LFB : Je ne vous avais jamais vu avec votre nouvel album. Je vous ai vus il y a longtemps à La Boule Noire.
GPB : Oh oui. C’est une salle sympa.
LFB : Oui. Avez-vous une routine particulière avant de monter sur scène ?
GPB : On fait un huddle ! Nous aimons nous serrer les uns contre les autres dans ce genre de ronde avant de monter sur scène. Di, notre batteur, aime sauter. Erv aime faire des pompes… des choses comme ça.
LFB : Et toi ?
CR : Je fais le huddle et je monte sur scène…
GPB : …faire le concert de rock !
LFB : Avez-vous un meilleur ou un pire souvenir d’un festival ou d’un concert ?
CR : Oh oui, il y en a des mauvais et des bons… Le dernier était bien parce qu’on jouait tard, c’était en fait le plus tard que nous ayons jamais joué.
Une fois on a sois disant dépassé le temps imparti, mais c’était parce que quelqu’un s’était trompé. Le chronométrage était erroné. Quelqu’un a donc pensé qu’il était plus tard qu’il ne l’était en réalité. Ce n’était pas le cas. Notre set a été interrompu. Et nous nous sommes retrouvés sur scène sans aucun son. Ça craignait.
GPB : Lors du premier concert de notre tournée américaine à Washington, James a dit en plaisantant qu’il faudrait faire un stand up de comédie de 10 minutes… et il a dû le faire (rires). Mais la plupart du temps, c’est juste amusant et nous sommes très chanceux que notre public soit généralement de notre côté… tout le monde était heureux quand nous avons pu commencé à jouer.
LFB : Une dernière question : quelle est l’importance de la restauration dans le festival ?
GPB : Oh, oui. C’est extraordinaire !
CR : L’Europe est… l’Europe continentale fait bien les choses.
GPB : C’est phénoménal
CR : C’est tellement bon.
GPB : Nous avons beaucoup de chance d’être nourris gratuitement lorsque nous venons jouer, c’est un privilège. Et la nourriture d’aujourd’hui était magnifique. Donc oui, c’est très important. Un grand coup de chapeau à tous les chefs et à tous ceux qui travaillent dans la restauration.
LFB : Nous avons interviewé les Lemon Twigs et ils nous ont dit : « Nous adorons venir en Europe, parce que vous nous nourrissez gratuitement »
GPB : Oui, ils ont raison !
LFB : Ce n’est pas la même chose en Amérique apparemment !

La Face B: The first question I always ask is How are you today?
Gabriel Paschal Blake: Good, good! (in French) Très bien, ouais. Ça va et toi ?
LFB: Ça va bien. Glad to be here.
GPB: Same with us.
LFB: Do you have a particular story with this festival?
GPB: Mm, I think we’ve just came here today.
Cathal Roper: Yeah.
GPB: I don’t think we’ve been, I don’t know have we been in Beauregard before?
CR: They’re telling me we’ve been here briefly but not like…
GPB: No, we haven’t played this festival before so we’re very excited to do it, yeah. It’s nice, it feels like a nice Sunday in France. We’re glad that we’re here.
LFB: The rain stopped so it’s ok.
GPB: Yeah exactly (laughs)
LFB: Did you have a look at the line up of the festival before you came to play?
GPB: uhm, we saw that Sting is playing later on! But unfortunately we have to head back to London tonight. We have to get the Eurotunnel so… we’re not going to be able to stay around, which is unfortunate, but… is there any band you are looking forward to see?
LFB: Airbourne.
GPB: Airbourne…
LFB: Yes, you too, no?
CR: Yeah!
LFB: Yes, we’re here for you and for Airbourne.
GPB: Cool. Right on!
LFB: How do you prepare your set list for a reduced time in a festival?
GPB: Um, it’s fun to try and put the most energy in a small amount of time. So that’s definitely full on. It’s really exciting doing the long form at our long shows as well. So we’re really looking forward to coming back to France in October/November time to do the full thing. But yes today it’s going to be more condensed and more rokus.
LFB: And you’re playing very early today. What’s the difference in reception between an early show and a later show at night?
CR: People get a bit more loose.
LFB: Do you think people are a bit more focused in early shows?
CR: Yeah, I don’t know, I never thought of it like that but…
GPB: People let themselves a bit more go when the darkness is around them, but people can definitely get really lively during the day too. I think people when they’re at a festival, they just like having a good time, you know, so that’s fun to watch. Fun to watch in the daylight as well.
LFB: Do you look at people who like discover you and see you for the first time in festival…
GPB: Yeah definitely. We played another festival on Thursday? Wednesday?
CR: on Friday.
GPB: Not that one but…
CR: Sorry, yeah, on Wednesday.
GPB: Festival Musilac. And there were definitely many people there who were seeing us for the first time. It was really fun. It’s exciting to watch people like… ‘cause we do it everyday almost. And like everytime we play the show we’re there. So we’ve seen it and felt it a lot of time, so it’s really nice to look at it through people’s faces for the first time.
LFB: Do you have any must-have or important tracks for you in your set list?
CR: I mean, yes we have kind of the energy bangers, we have feeling phases… And for everything we kind of have…
GPB: Everything’s been really good for this festival we’re on a field so it’s really explosive. This is a real treat, this is the first line of festivals where we’ve been able to play our new album (Gigi’s Recovery, 2023). So yeah, that’s been very exciting as well.
We’ve had lots of the songs written last year when we were at the festivals and there was that feeling of really wanting to play them, so it’s a good release this year to do.
LFB: I’ve never seen you before with your new album. I’ve seen you a long time ago at La Boule Noire.
GPB: Oh Yeah. That’s a cool place.
LFB: Yeah. Do you have any particular routine before going on stage?
GPB: We have a huddle! We like all hold each other in that kind of round before stage. Di, our drummer, likes to skip. Erv (???) likes to do some press ups… things like that.
LFB: And you?
CR: I just do the huddling and get on stage…
GPB: …do the rock show.
LFB: Do you have a best or worst memory in a festival or show?
CR: Oh yeah, there’s some bad ones there’s some good ones… I mean the last one was good because it was a late one, it was actually the latest we ever played.
We’ve had one before where we went over the time, but it’s because someone had something wrong. The timings were wrong. So someone thought it had gone later that it actually was. That wasn’t. And then our set was cut. And we were just on stage with no sound coming off. That sucked.
GPB: The first show on our American tour in Washington, James joked that it would have to be a 10min comedy stand up piece… and then he actually had to do it (laugh). But sometimes it’s just fun and we’re very lucky that our crowd is generally on our side… everyone was happy when we started playing so.
LFB: I have one last question: what the importance of catering in the festival?
GPB: Oh, yeah. It’s amazing!
CR: Europe is… mainland Europe gets it right.
GPB: It’s phenomenal
CR: It’s so good.
GPB: We’re very lucky to be given free food, when we come to play, that’s a privilege. And the food here today was gorgeous. So yes it’s very important. Massive shout out to all the chefs and people who work in the catering.
LFB: We did an interview with the Lemon Twigs and they told us “We love to come to Europe, ‘cause you give us free food”
GPB: Yeah that’s good!
LFB: It’s not the same in America apparently!
