FR : Toutes les chansons de l’album I forget where we were m’amènent inévitablement à écouter l’album dans son intégralité – un chef-d’œuvre auquel je reviens souvent. J’adore la façon dont les paroles racontent une histoire : j’ai l’impression d’être plongée dans le moment qu’il décrit, comme si j’étais dans un roman ou dans la cuisine de quelqu’un. Il y a dans l’interprétation et les arrangements une intensité émotionnelle et une authenticité qui me captivent à chaque écoute.
EN : All the songs on the album I forget where we were inevitably lead to my listening to the entire album – a masterpiece that I visit often. I adore the storytelling quality of the lyrics – I feel like I’m in the moment he is describing – like I’m in a novel or in someone’s kitchen. There is an emotional intensity and rawness to the performance and arrangement that pulls me in again and again.
Nina Simone – Who Knows Where the Time Goes

FR : J’adore la simplicité de cette chanson, initialement interprétée par Sandy Denny, du groupe Fairport Convention. L’interprétation est calme et sobre, mais elle est tellement riche.
Nina Simone représente tellement de choses pour moi que je me devais de l’inclure dans cette liste. Même dans une interprétation aussi calme, elle incarne pour moi une puissance et une force qui naissent de la vulnérabilité. La crème de la crème.
EN : I love the simplicity of this song, originally by Sandy Denny of Fairport Convention. The performance is quiet and understated but it holds so much. Nina Simone represents so much to me that I had to include her in this list. Even in such a quiet performance she symbolises to me a power and strength in vulnerability. The best of the best.
Fleetwood Mac – Big Love (from the 1997 Live performance)

FR : J’étais complètement accro à cet album live quand je l’ai découvert parmi les CD’s de mes parents à l’adolescence, et j’ai eu la chance de voir le groupe au complet en concert quelques années plus tard. Cette chanson dégage une intensité que je ne comprends pas tout à fait, et j’adore le fait que l’interprétation soit presque bestiale.
EN : I was obsessed with this Live album when I found it amongst my parents CD’s in my teens, and I was lucky enough to experience the full band live in concert years later. This song has an intensity I don’t fully understand, and I love that the performance is almost animalistic.
Elanor Moss – Again, My Love

FR : En fait, j’ai découvert cette chanson après avoir terminé mon album, mais je l’ai incluse parce qu’elle me fait penser à chez moi. Il y a quelque chose de merveilleusement doux, d’authentique et de nostalgique dans la voix et l’arrangement de cette chanson. Le fait de savoir qu’elle a été enregistrée sur bande m’aide aussi à m’y identifier d’une certaine manière : c’est un choix que nous avons fait pour mon album. Il y a quelque chose de magnifique et de spontané qui se produit quand on enregistre sur bande, car on rejette d’emblée le perfectionnisme numérique.
EN : I actually came across this song after I had finished my album, but I include it because it feels like home to me. There is something beautifully soft and real and nostalgic in the voice and the arrangement of this song. Knowing that it was recorded to tape also helps me relate somehow: this is something we chose to do with my album – there is something beautiful and spontaneous that happens when we record to tape, where you instantly reject digital perfectionism.
BANKS – Better

FR : Je suis une grande fan de Banks : elle incarne à la fois la vulnérabilité, l’authenticité, le charme et la force. J’adore le caractère informel de cette chanson : on n’a pas l’impression qu’elle s’articule autour d’une structure couplet-refrain classique, mais plutôt autour d’une émotion, d’une véritable explosion de sentiments. C’est ce que je cherche à faire dans ma musique : saisir l’instant présent d’une chanson, plutôt que de courir après la perfection.
EN : I am a huge fan of Banks – she represents everything that is vulnerable and raw and sexy and powerful all at once. I love the formlessness of this song – it doesn’t feel like it is built around a traditional verse-chorus structure so much as it is built around feeling – an explosion of emotion. Something I strive for in music – to capture the moment of a song, rather than chasing perfection.
